ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

Welcome to the Rocky Horror Picture Show Info site! It’s your source for all things great and small about the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I originally saw the show when I turned 16, and I have never been the same since. At a surface level, it appears to be a fun, outrageous show about two teenagers (played by Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick) who get trapped in a strange mansion full of debauchery and strange experimentation.

But, below all of that there is something more. It speaks to us on a level, knowingly or not, and displays how we, as a society, get caught up in constructed sexual mores and social restrictions. But what affect does that have on us? Both teenagers are pretty much allegories of this phenomenon. They go through several hurdles (which include sleeping with the same man, and Janet’s unquenchable libido, etc.) which lead them through a degree of pain and discomfort. However, in the end, they become, liberated, and truly happy HUMAN beings. This show really speaks to our need to connect to our animal nature.

Originally, the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” was the “Rocky Horror Show” and was produced in London in 1973. Richard O’Brien, who also played Riff Raff in the film, wrote all of the book, lyrics, and music. He wrote the play in his home country, New Zealand. I used to live in New Zealand for a short amount of time, and when I was there I saw the stage production when I lived in New Zealand, and it was amazing.

This was particularly interesting because New Zealand is somewhat of a conservative country, but this delicious play was written by “one of their own.” The set was simple and black. Very much like its filmed incarnation, the stage production was even more outlandish than the film. The sex scenes were definitely not going for the realistic, but the satirical, which, sexual mores are, at the core of it, right? It made us all realize how much “fun” is a part of being a human being.
